Composer

Leilei Tian: was born in 1971 in China. She began studying piano at the age of six. From 1988 to 1995, she studied composition at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and she obtained her Master's degree. In 1997, she studied in Sweden at the Conservatory of Music in Gothenburg where she received her advanced degree in 2001.

She takes part in the Darmstadt Summer School, at the Acanthes Center, at the "Voix Nouvelles" in Royaumont, at the International Meeting of Young Composers in Apeldoorn, at the Summer School at IRCAM, at the Academy "Avantgarde Schwaz" in Austria. She is taking lessons from Brian Ferneyhough, Salvatore Sciarrino, Gerard Grisey, Louis Andriessen and Boguslaw Schaeffer.

From 2002 to 2003, she studied composition and computer music at IRCAM and worked with Philippe Leroux, Jonathan Harvey, Tristan Murail, Brian Ferneyhough, Philippe Manoury and Philippe Hurel. Since then, she moved to Paris.

She receives commissions from music institutions, festivals and ensembles and her music is well received internationally. Her works are performed by, among others, the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gothenburg National Orchestra, the Lisbon Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Strasbourg Orchestra, the Orchester de la Serbian Radio Television, the Hong Kong Orchestra, the Beijing Orchestra, the Ensemble Intercontemporain de Paris, the Young Soloists of Paris, the Ensemble OrchestralContemporain de Lyon, the Nieuw Ensemble of Amsterdam, the Ensemble IntégralesdeHambourg, the Zagros Ensemble of Helsinki, the New Modern Ensemble of Montreal, the San Francisco Earplay Ensemble etc. in festivals such as ISCM World Music Days, Agora Festival in Paris, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (UK), The Venice Biennale, Spring Festival of Arts of Monaco, Stravinsky Festival in Arhnem (Netherlands), Heidelberger Frühling International Music Festival (Germany), Festival 'Rainbow day' in Luxembourg, Nordic Music Days, St ockholm New Musik, Asian Music Festival in Japan, etc. His compositions are also broadcast on radio, CD and Internet.

 

She is the laureate of several prestigious international competitions such as Concours de Besançon for orchestra in France (1st prize), Competition "Citta 'di Udine" in Italy (1st prize), Competition of GRAME in Lyon (1st prize), Concours de Gaudeamus in Amsterdam and ISCM Award for Young Composer (Cash Young Composer's Award).

 

Laureate of the selection of the Académie de France in Rome, she is currently a resident for a one-year stay at the Villa Medici from April 2012.
