Rainer Schmidt’s main violin teacher was Prof. Atila Aydintan in Hannover Germany. The year before joining the Hagen Quartet in 1987, he studied in Cincinnati, USA with Kurt Sassmannshaus and Dorothy Delay, quartet with Walter Levin. Recently Elmar Budde and Felix Lindenmaier became very important influences on his approach to music. In 1989 he cofounded the Ravinia Trio. Since 1988 he teaches at the “Mozarteum” Salzburg, from 2002 until 2007 he had both string quartet and violin students at the “Escuela Superior Reina Sofia” in Madrid, since 2007 he does the same at the Musikakademie Basel, holding now the “Walter Levin chair”. He teaches masterclasses all over the world and is member of most prestigious competitions’ juries.
